Woodturning Lessons

Scott Maddox of Southern Turnings teaches multiple classes depending upon the student's needs and desires. Classes offered are:

• Introduction to Woodturning 1 (1 - 1 1/2 hour session for $100.)
• Session includes discussion of woodturning safety, an overview of a wood lathe and types of wood lathes, woodturning tools and accessories, sharpening and demonstration and student participation of two of the seven woodturning cuts - the planning cut and the V cut.
• Introduction to Woodturning 2 (Expanded Session - 3 hr session for $150.)
• Session is a continuation of Introduction to Woodturning with more time turning on the lathe to include the rest of the basic cuts - Cove, Flat, Bead, Points and Disks - used in woodturning.
• Introduction to Spinning Tops (1 to 1 1/2 hour session for $75)
• Students will turn a spinning top. The student will leave with a functioning spinning top of their making.
• Introduction to Pens (1 1/2 hour session for $100.)
• Students will turn and finish a pen blank and assemble the parts to make a pen. The student will leave with a pen of their making.
• Introduction to Bowls (5-hour session for $175.)
• Students will turn and finish a wood bowl blank. The student will leave with a finished bowl of their making.
• Custom Classes - custom classes may be arranged with the instructor based upon the desires and needs of the student and will be priced based upon materials and time required.

These sessions are hands-on, in a private or group setting (up to 3 persons) and are held on site. He offers these classes to those at the 6th-grade level (minimum of 11 years old) up to and including senior adults. The classes are recommended to be taken in the order listed; however, it is not required.  Any class may be taken in any order except the Introduction to Woodturning 1 and 2 classes.  The student's learning curve will be much improved if taken in this order; however, the student's end goal will help to determine which class or classes should be taken.

Once you've successfully completed the introductory classes and want to learn and practice more with the instructor, the fees are:

• For students from grades 6-12, it is $25 an hour
• For college age and up, it is $75 an hour
